Growing Information
The Datil pepper thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic soil under the full sun. While they love the sun, they appreciate afternoon shade during the peak of summer. Start your seedlings indoors and once the frost risk has passed, transplant them outdoors, ensuring a spacing of 14-18 inches between the plants. They require deep watering, but remember to let the soil dry slightly between waterings. And as they grow, support them with stakes or cages to manage their abundant fruiting. With the right care, these fiery wonders will begin fruiting 90-100 days after transplanting.
'Nir’s Take'
“This plant is always a staple in my garden. Not only does it consistently perform, but it’s also super productive, providing lots of peppers. When you need a good amount of fruit for your sauces, jellies, or salsas, this plant has your back. The colors are simply amazing: bright yellow or orange, almost like a tangerine, contrasting beautifully with the green leaves. It’s a joy to see these colors in the garden. Also, these are super easy to grow. If you spend a little time on them, they’ll do even better. I’ve always grown them, but I’m pretty sure they’d do well in a container too.”
Cooking & Eating Ideas
Datil peppers are incredibly versatile. With their sweet, fruity flavor and moderate heat, they're great in hot sauces, salsas, and relishes. Try them in marinades, stews, and even jellies for a zesty surprise. They're also fantastic for creating homemade hot sauces or adding a kick to your favorite recipes.
