Growing Information

Chiltepin peppers are wild at heart, thriving best in warm climates with rich, well-drained soil and full sun. They appreciate some afternoon shade, especially in hot desert regions. Start them indoors and then transplant them outdoors when temperatures consistently stay above 65 F. Ideal for USDA Zones 8–11, these peppers might even grow as perennials if protected from frost. Remember to keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging – these peppers are drought-tolerant once established. Fertilize every 2–4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth, reducing nitrogen as the plant begins fruiting. Mulching helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, which is especially important in hot, dry climates.

'Nir’s Take'

The one thing I love about gardening is that you can grow crazy different types of varieties that you can’t find anywhere else. This is one of those chilies that you won’t see at any of these stores or at a nursery. It’s fascinating! This chili has a pretty cool story. It grows wild and is protected in national parks. Plus, it’s super hot, a lot hotter than a jalapeño. I’ve used to dry them out for seasoning, but you definitely need a lot of peppers to get a good amount of seasoning. Still, it’s a lot of fun!

Cooking & Eating Ideas

These peppers can add a kick to any dish! Try them dried and ground into a spicy seasoning, or toss them fresh into a salsa or chili for a fiery surprise. Just remember to use them sparingly – these little guys pack a punch!
