Growing Information

While the Serrano Tampiqueño loves the sun, it can also appreciate a bit of afternoon shade during the hottest summer days. It prefers rich, well-draining soil and moderate moisture. Once the risk of frost has passed and temperatures remain above 65 degrees Fahrenheit, it's time to transplant your seedlings outdoors. Remember to gradually introduce them to outdoor conditions over the course of a week to harden them off. Space your plants 14-18 inches apart and ensure they receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Fertilize at planting with a balanced fertilizer, and switch to a low-nitrogen fertilizer during flowering to encourage fruit production. These plants are sturdy and generally do not require staking, although adding light support may help once they begin to bear fruit.

'Nir’s Take'

Serrano chilies are super versatile, and my best memory of this is when I make biryani in the pressure cooker. The recipe calls for serrano peppers, so I just run out to the backyard and grab a bunch. Anytime I need a chili that’s hotter than a jalapeño but not too crazy, these are perfect. They last in the garden for a while, so if you consume a lot of this, I definitely recommend getting several of these plants. I can never have enough!

Cooking & Eating Ideas

The Serrano Tampiqueño pepper is a star in Mexican cuisine and can spice up any dish. It's perfect for adding a kick to homemade salsas, marinades, and chilis. Try pickling them for a tangy, spicy addition to your dishes or just slice and add to pizzas, pastas, or salads for a burst of heat.
